Impact of contrasted maize root traits at flowering on water stress tolerance – A simulation study

چکیده
Water stress is among the dominant yield limiting factors in global crop production. Better drought resistance is therefore a key challenge for breeding and crop management. Avoidance of water stress by effective root water uptake is considered a promising approach to yield stability in water limiting environments. Water uptake efficiency is the result of multiple plant root traits that dynamically interact with site hydrology. Root models are therefore an essential tool to identify key root traits for water efficient crops in a certain target cropping environment. ã 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V. Reduced Lateral Root Branching Density Improves Drought Tolerance in Maize.
An emerging paradigm is that root traits that reduce the metabolic costs of soil exploration improve the acquisition of limiting soil resources. Here, we test the hypothesis that reduced lateral root branching density will improve drought tolerance in maize (Zea mays) by reducing the metabolic costs of soil exploration, permitting greater axial root elongation, greater rooting depth, and thereb...
متن کاملResponses of rooting traits in peanut genotypes under pre-flowering drought stress
The root is an important plant part contributing to peanut productivity underwater-limited conditions. Root volume, root surface area and root diameter may becharacters responding to pre-flowering drought (PFD) in peanut. The objectives ofthis study were to investigate the responses to PFD for root surface area, rootvolume and root diameter and to determine the inter-relationships among theresp...
متن کاملDetermination of Aluminum Stress Tolerance Threshold During Seed Germination of Wheat
Environmental stresses are the most important factors that reduce plant growth in stages of development. The presence of aluminum in acidic soils as an environmental stress has an impact on different parts of the plant and reduces root growth, water absorption and nutrients and increases susceptibility to drought. In order to evaluate the effect of aluminum stress levels on wheat at germinatio...
متن کاملQTL-By-Environment Interaction in the Response of Maize Root and Shoot Traits to Different Water Regimes
Drought is a major abiotic stress factor limiting maize production, and elucidating the genetic control of root system architecture and plasticity to water-deficit stress is a crucial problem to improve drought adaptability. In this study, 13 root and shoot traits and genetic plasticity were evaluated in a recombinant inbred line (RIL) population under well-watered (WW) and water stress (WS) co...
متن کاملRooting traits of peanut genotypes differing in drought tolerance under drought stress
The effects of two water regimes (well-watered condition or drought stress) on root length, root surface area and root volume were tested on two peanut genotypes (the drought-resistantvariety HuaYu 22 (HY22) and the drought-sensitive variety HuaYu 23 (HY23)), measured 101days after sowing. The roots were sampled from the upper (0–40 cm) and deeper (40–100 cm)soil layers. Root diameter was measur...
